Amphibolite

kamienne drogowskazy szlaku górniczego

This specimen of amphibolite comes from the mine in Ogorzelec (Rudawy Janowickie Mountains). It is over 500 million years old. It was formed out of volcanic rocks resembling basalt that were later in the earth’s crust exposed to high temperature and pressure. Those factors changed basalt into amphibolite, a rock consisting mainly of hornblende and plagioclase feldspars.

As it is rich in hornblende, it is dark green-grey. It becomes lighter in hue as it gets weathered. In numerous cracks there are cherry red-brown ferruginous blooms, probably made of epidote.

In the upper part of the rock block there is a dark green fragment, unusually smooth, slightly shiny, as if waxed. It is most likely part of the so-called tectonic mirror, a surface along which rocks moved.
