Dolomite marble

kamienne drogowskazy szlaku górniczego
This type of rock was originally made from skeletons and shells of tiny sea animals that after their death accumulated on the seabed. Limestone deposits, which were formed in such a way went down into the earth’s crust. Subsequently, high pressure, temperature and mineral substances transformed them into the present rock.
Due to the upheaval of the earth’s crust, the rock can be now found above the surface of the earth.
Dolomite consists almost exclusively of minute dolomite crystals. Their smooth facets reflect sunlight, so the rock sparkles and resembles a lump of crystalline sugar.
This particular specimen comes from the mine in Rędziny (Rudawy Janowickie Mountains).
The rock is over 500 million years old.
