Melaphyre

Melaphyre is a volcanic rock similar to basalt in origin and appearance. As liquid lava, it cooled on the surface or near it within the earth’s crust. The rock mainly consists of pyroxenes and plagioclase feldspars. It also contains quartz, olivine and orthoclase. It is a massive rock having a conchoidal fracture, made from minute mineral crystals. As it gets weathered, iron oxides make it red-brown. Fissures contain ferruginous blooms called dendrites that resemble fern leaves.
In comparison to other rock formations in the Western Sudeten Mountains, melaphyre is relatively young. It was formed during the Lower Permian epoch, about 240 million years ago.
